Sand...

I love the beach. I love everything about it. Except the sand. I can't help but wonder, does everyone feel the same way about the sand? We've spent each day of our vacation at the beach and we're having a great time! The kids have been out in the surf with their boogie boards and skim boards, relishing their ocean experience.

As we get settled in on the beach, the kids run off.  Here begins my battle with the sand.  As they run off, sand flings from their feet and immediately sticks to my lip gloss. My friend, Louie, the head coach of our daughter's softball team, has created "the lip gloss award" which he presents to the girl who shows up to softball wearing the most girly display of lipgloss. I would win this award at the beach. Only, mine now sand in it.

As our kids come up to where we are sitting, I hold my hand up and out, the universal traffic signal to stop. They don't drive yet, so they continue to run past and step right on my bag, which shoots sand into all the crevices of my wallet. I start dumping my wallet and begin muttering to myself about the sand. They apologetically pat me on the head and run off. Now, I have sand in my hair. I pull out my camcorder and sure enough, there's sand under the lens cover. Our youngest son runs back to throw his towel up by our chairs and knocks my phone out of my hand and into the sand, so now it's in every small groove of my phone. I look down at the kids and there's Buck, walking gingerly up to the towels like he's been on a horse for several weeks. I don't need to ask. It's sand and it's you-know-where. His brother soon follows and he has sand, too. In his eyes. Surely, God must have a really good reason for all that sand. I just haven't figured it out yet.

Maybe if we lived here, we would master the sand. But, I'm thinking that even for the locals, sand is always going to have the upper hand. As I sit back and watch the kids frolic in the ocean, I can't help but wonder what the beach would look like if God had chosen grass instead of sand.

Sheila, I am so glad you and your family had a great vacation. Scott also shares the same "sand sentiments" with you. Our trip to Hawaii would have not been the same with "grass", but by the end of the day he was searching!! Great Blogs...keep on blogging!

Thanks, Lisa! I'm with Scott...I think if it were just adults, we could manage the sand. Throw the kids in there and it's literally everywhere. I still have sand in my phone and in my purse. It's kind of a nice reminder of our time at the beach - at least that's what I tell myself. Yes, we had a GREAT time and it already feels like ages ago. Except for the sand, which reminds me it wasn't!
