Cherry Chocolate Cake...

The boys have now joined their sisters in back-to-school bliss, which means just one thing around here....cherry chocolate cake day. It's long been a tradition in our home that mom always bakes this homemade goodie on the first day of school. So, when the kids come clamoring in the door after a long day away, there's a much-anticipated, decadent snack sitting on a plate next to a tall, cold glass of milk. Makes the first day of school much more palatable.

Last year, with the boys and the girls in two different schools starting on two different days, it was suggested by the male children that I make one cake on the boys' first day and another on the girls' first day. We tried it and it was, simply, too much cake. So, this year it was decided that there would be but one cherry chocolate cake and it would be on the first day that EVERYBODY went back to school - which was Monday the 16th.  I spent the morning baking the cake and cooking the homemade frosting, making sure it turned out just right. No one was disappointed in their after-school treat and we had so much cake that we ran half of it down the street to share with a family celebrating a birthday.

Now it's quiet again as I've gotten them all showered and tucked into bed for the night. It's finally time for me to enjoy my piece of cherry chocolate cake. Moms need to enjoy the first day of school, too!
