Eye Doctor

I wish I had a photo.

We had gone to the eye doctor several days ago because Buck needed his annual eye exam to adjust the prescription on his lenses, which he only uses in the classroom at school. Wade and I decided to get checked out, too.

Wade's first ever eye exam showed he has mild nearsightedness, which I understand to mean that he has some trouble seeing things at a distance. For him, his only complaint had been not being able to see the ticker tape that runs along the bottom of the TV screen on CNBC during the trading day. I suggested he move closer to the TV.

My vision check exposed what I already knew, old age. My pride got a small boost when the doctor told me that I've gone longer than most people do with my condition. I explained that I've been in denial for quite some time. He smiled, as if to say, I know.

After the exam, they sent us out to the 3 million frames on display. As I tried on frames, trying to picture myself looking sophisticated wearing glasses, Buck would find and put on the most hideous frames while making Mr. Bean faces, poses and gestures. Finally, realizing that my ability to concentrate had been completely hijacked by the young comedian, I held up the white flag and decided to assist Wade, who had zeroed in on some frames with magnetic sunglass lenses that pop onto the front. These would not have been my first choice, but I could tell that Wade had found the perfect combo. After some giggles and some fun teasing him, we found a pair that suited his face the best. He gave them the specifics and was told it would be several days before they were ready.

After a lifetime without vision correction, it was quite the sight when Wade walked in today wearing his new glasses. It's a good look, just different. The problem with my all-or-nothing husband is that although his vision is fine except for at a distance, he insists on wearing his glasses all the time. When he got a headache sitting at his computer, I suggested he remove his glasses as they were not for up-close correction. His response today has been the same...I've got glasses and I'm going to wear them. When we drove to the gym, he discovered that he forgot the magnetic sunglass lenses that pop onto the front and instead was being blinded by the now magnetized sun hitting his eyes. Again, we got the same response...I've got glasses and I'm going to wear them.

And so he does.
