Having brothers....

Many people have told me that I should write about my two brothers, since I have blogged about my sister and mother previously. I have seen from many years of experience that there is not really anything dull about my life, having brothers in my life equals a neverending non-stop noisy house during the day. Pretty much the only time I can have a little silence would be at night. The boys go to bed a lot earlier than my sister and I. We usually spend our time reading quietly in bed and occasionally write a short story just for fun. Even at night there is no silence, as I sit in bed I think of how it might be if we had a girls vacation. My thoughts are brushed away quickly as the sound of two snoring boys float in my bedroom.

Mornings are supposed to be when you refresh your mind for the new day. You'r supposed to have a calm morning. Our mornings include my youngest brother, Colton, playing his ps2 in his room with the volume all the way up and he is usually cheering as loud as his little lungs will allow him to. (He is usually yelling at the 'team' and acting as though they could actually hear him and would do what he says.) He loves to be in charge. (Which includes his favorite thing, giving orders.)

My other brother, Buck, wakes up at 5:00 and turns on cartoons. (Which has been his show since preschool.) I still think that they are a little pointless. Although every morning I am woken up by the television and wearily dragged myself to the couch. I open my still half- asleep eyes and stare at the tv screen. (Hoping that Buck would soon get hungry and leave the remote on the couch and go have a bite to eat.)  Then I would strike. I'd grab the remote and flip it to my channnel, Animal Planet. I guess that I cant complain because the television is a lot better than waking up at 5:30 by the relentless accordian. At least the tv has a volume button!

My brothers have very odd ways of keeping themselves entertained. Buck's idea of entertainment is going into his room, and turn on a movie. I am fine with that, but once the movie is over, he simply rewinds it and replays it over and over. He replays it until he can recite each line by heart. But he does not stop there. He waits until the next time we go on a long drive and then he convinces everyone to play his favorite game. Someone says a title of a movie and the first one to say a full line first wins. They do this over and over until finally they wear everyone out. It is usually the girls who end the game first. (I think the boys are wired with a never ending energy supply!)    But Colton's game is terribe. It drives me crazy! He takes a small rubber ball about the size of a ping pong ball and throws it at the front door. Making a loud noise that echoes thoughout the house. This game is simply a mini game of baseball. Only- with one player. When he throws the ball at the door, it bounces off into the family room. He screams and cheers at his 'team' as he retrieves the ball. I think if you are ever sitting in the family room when he is playing, it is at your own risk of being pelted with balls that are coming at you from any direction. Colton cannot stand to lose. (Did I mention that in his game he is the coach, picher, and the umpire of the game.) If he is losing and the ball goes a good distance away from the door and far into the family room, he briskly runs into the family room, gets the ball and runs over to what is supposed to be home plate. He just says that it counts as an out because he claims he was a very slow runner. Colton is always the winner.

If you still dont understand how life is over here, I have plenty more stories that I wouldn't even have enough room to fit onto this page.

Hey Sierra…………..great blog!! I love your writing style. Thanks for giving us the scoop on your younger brothers. I can see where they are posing quite an inconvenience for you around the house. How is a girl like you ever able to get some quiet time to herself, particularly in the mornings when you need to peacefully enter each new day with sweet serenades in your ears instead of banging gongs and cymbals? How rude!! But, as you have probably heard more than once, “boys will be boys”. :-)

After reading your blog, I got to thinking about how my older sister, my younger brother, and I got along when she was your age. My younger brother was always pretty obnoxious, but I was always so nice to my sister. She just misunderstood my intentions most of the time. If you promise not to laugh, or use similar tactics on your brothers, I will relate one such incident that proves my point.

My sister was smart and nice and had all these cool friends. She always followed my parent’s instructions and never got into trouble, so she was a great role model for me. She did have one character flaw though, which I worked diligently for several years to try and correct. She was totally scared of loud noises. I had decided early in my life that I was not going to be afraid of anything, so, if I had a fear about something, I would confront that fear “head on” until I didn’t fear it anymore. Well, I figured if that tactic worked for me, it should also work for my older sister.

Every 4th of July holiday was greeted with trepidation by my sister, but each year that seemed to be a perfect time for me to try and break her of her fear of loud noises. Her bedroom was in the basement, so I would get up early on the 4th and start the day off by throwing a couple of firecrackers into her window well. Sounded like a cannon going off! Then, later in the day as she was playing outside, I would set off a few firecrackers when she would least expect it, and the results were always the same………screams, leaps into the air, and evil looks. It got so bad that all I had to do was yell “firecracker” and point behind her and she would jump off the ground with her arms flailing around her. It was very funny to see, but it became obvious after a while that my tactic for curing her was not working.

Then, one pleasant spring afternoon, I suddenly lost all desire to cure my sister of her fear of loud noises. My sister and a few of her coolest girl friends were putting on a “fashion show” in our living room that day, and they asked me to fill in for one of their friends who couldn’t make it over for the fun. In previous visits to our house, they had always acted like I had the plague and told me to make myself invisible, but this time was different. So when they asked me to join in, I jumped at the chance! Of course, they had me go first, and they all got busy making me look real stylish. They loaded me up with costume jewelry, red lip stick, and a nice pink hat that tilted off to the side. The mini skirt they had me put on looked more like a “maxi” on me, and those high heels were most difficult to stand up in. I was feeling very helpful at that point and quite happy to be part of a show that featured such popular girls from my school, until my sister brought out that old camera. Before I could move, the flash bulb went off and my goose was cooked!! They all had a big laugh at my expense, and then blackmailed me with a simple threat……….If I ever tried to scare my sister again with loud noises, they would post my “stylish” picture up on the school bulletin board for all to see. Needless to say, I never tried to scare my sister with load noises again!

Hey, come to think about it, my sister never did show me that picture……..kind of makes me wonder if that old camera even had any film in it. Randall

Hey Randall-
Don't worry... your secret's safe with me. I love my brothers and would do ANYTHING for them, but sometimes all the noise that they make kinda gets out of hand. (Obviously, they don't have the same fear as your sister did.) = ) Maybe you could check with your sister to see if that photo exists - I'd LOVE to see it (and post it on my blog.) I hope that you have an awesome day!!!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ………………you are soooooooooooooo funny!!! The first part of your request seems innocent enough, just to see that picture. But then to mention posting it on your blog site……………YIKES!!! You’re bad! However, your idea about checking with my sister concerning the status of that picture is rather tempting, especially since I will be visiting her in South Dakota next week. So, at the risk of opening myself up again for some old fashioned ribbing and “piling on” from my family back home, what’s it worth to you?? You didn’t think I would give it up that easily, did you. Have a blessed day! Randall :-)
